Harper’s Island – So Far, So Meh (HF Replay)
The first episode of Harper’s Island aired last night and it wasn’t rock ‘em, sock ‘em, but it didn’t suck either. It actually kept me awake, which is not an easy task my friends.
The episode was entitled, Whap. And just like most pilot episodes we get our back-story and the introduction of the characters. We learn seven years ago, John Wakefield went all Ted Bundy and offed a few citizens of Harper’s Island and was killed by the sheriff. With our lead character Abby returning to the island for the first time since to attend the week long wedding of her best friend, Henry. Apparently, Abby’s mother was one of Wakefield’s victims. The character is played by Christopher Gorham, who was once Henry on Ugly Betty. Anyone else somewhat annoyed his name is still Henry?
Anyway, Henry is marrying the local rich bitch, Trish Wellington or to us Supernatural fans, Ruby. We find out Trish’s father does not approve of the marriage and apparently is conspiring with her ex-boyfriend Hunter (who is smoking hot, by the way) to keep the wedding from happening.
Every character is written to stereotype of course, but I didn’t mind that. But nicely enough we got blood early on in the form of a nice decapitation of Cousin Ben. There was some banter between the characters once they reach the island, which was overall boring and a bit pointless. It of course served its purpose of setting up the season’s upcoming storylines. We get back-story about the murders and we find out Henry’s brother is suicidal; Abby’s dad is the sheriff and some English fellow trying to propose to his girlfriend.

I almost forgot to mention how excited I was with them giving Harry Hamlin a job. But, they did pull a neat little trick a kill him off next. And they did it in a nice way, they cut him half. So, good job guys!

The show overall had a few nice little horror elements in some jump moments and the occasional lurching figure in the background. And there is a little girl we need to watch named Madison, who looks sweet, but I have a feeling she could possibly be the killer in this.
Check out the nice death chart below. Click on it a couple of times it gets bigger so you can read it, or don’t your choice. Two down 24 to go. Thoughts, groans, theories?
