Pretty wedding dress? Check. Lovely Estate? Check. Cheesy music for reception? Check. Zombie flesh eating infectious disease? Check.
Making its entry into the REC franchise is [REC]³ Génesis. This time the story has finally departed the apartment building from the first two films. In this chapter we are invited to the wedding of Koldo (Diego Martín) and Clara (Leticia Dolera). The wedding goes off without a hitch, pun intended, but the reception is a whole other story. Unfortunately for the party goers the reception is attended by Koldo’s infected uncle, whom at first glance appears to be drunk. However, the uncle says he has been bitten by a dog. Remember the dog of the little girl way back from the first film? In other words this is the tie-in to the first two REC films. If you’ve seen the first films you already know this is bad for everyone involved, especially when Uncle starts attacking everyone spreading the infection quickly.
Unlike the first two films the tone of [REC]³ is a little on the cheeky side. The plot of course involves Clara and Koldo trying to get find their ways back to each after their reception turns into a bloody massacre. There is blood, and a few chainsaw kills that are fun enough, but other than that the film is not that great. Some of the “funny” gags fell a little flat and the dialogue in certain areas was a little predictable. At one point Koldo is literally running around dressed as a knight on a quest to save Clara, totally Legend of Zelda style. There are of course a few scenes where the couple declare their undying love for one another. Clara at one point tells us she would feel it if Koldo is dead. Yeah, ok. Sigh.
However, there are some good moments, because after all I am all for some girl power. So watching Clara get her final girl on was fun to watch -even if she did it in awful shoes. Although this is not the best entry in this franchise, [REC]³ is not the worst either. I was actually a little more entertained with this film than I was with REC 2, which in my opinion was a slow and unmemorable and something about religion or whatever.
[REC]³ Génesis is currently available On-Demand and will be released in limited theaters on September 7th. Check here for theaters.
