Entry three into what is becoming my favorite Thursday night show is as promised darker with greater payoffs. And the payoffs are revenge! Tonight’s two segments kick off the Halloween season with “All Hallows Eve” and “The Man in the Suitcase”.
“All Hallows Eve”
Directed by John Harrison
Cast: Connor Christie, Madison Thompson, Jasun Jabbar, Andrew Eakle, Michael May, Julia Denton, Scott Daniel Johnson, Tom Olson, Erica Frene
Written by Bruce Jones
Even then they’re a little too old, this group of friends still want to trick-or-treat but getting candy isn’t all they are looking for.
If you are true horror fan or if you’ve watched any recent horror movies, tv shows or even read the casual horror/supernatural book you will quickly figure what the deal is with the Golden Dragons. However, you will also want to know exactly how the circumstances of their situation happened. There is a little edge on your seat action in this segment. The reason All Hallows’ Eve works so well is because it’s a short segment, and you quickly move through the story. The ending although extremely satisfying is a little cliched, but the scene is done so well you won’t mind.
“The Man in the Suitcase”
Directed by Dave Bruckner (The Ritual)
Cast: Antwan “Big Boi” Patton, Will Kindrachuk, Ravi Naidu, Madison Bailey, Ian Gregg, Nasim Bowlus, Carey Jones
Written by Christopher Buehlman
A college student brings the wrong bag home from the airport only to find a pretzeled man trapped inside, afflicted by a strange condition that turns his pain into gold.
The first thing I thought of while watching this segment was it’s a djinn!! As previously stated if you have ever watched a horror you know anytime a djinn is involved it’s never as easy as it seems on the surface. This segment had a sillier vibe than the first segment of the episode, but just as expected it gets dark and violent quickly. Also, there is a satisfying, albeit humorous ending. There is a definitive call back this episode, not necessarily in complete storyline but definitely in tone. I would point you in the direction of “Something To Tide You Over” from the Creepshow film.
The difference in this episode is there seems to be a common thread of revenge. When I first watched the episode I immediately picked “All Hallows Eve” as my favorite, but now on after a some thought “The Man in the Suitcase” has taken the title because I’m a sucker for a good guy winning. Even if it’s only a slightly better than the others good guy.
