Into the Dark returns today with its Pet Appreciation Week episode called Good Boy.
When Maggie gets an emotional support dog to help quell some of her anxiety, she finds him to be even more effective than she imagined…because unbeknownst to her, he kills anyone who adds stress to her life.
The episode stars the always likable Judy Greer as Maggie a writer who suffers from anxiety. At the suggestion of her boss, she adopts one of the cutest little dogs to provide emotional support and to give her something to change her focus. And, of course Reuben as she names him, does what dogs usually do. He worked his magic and made her fall in love with him. And, Reuben falls in love with her as well. In fact, he becomes extremely protective – Extremely. In other words, Reuben is not just Chihuahua protective, he is Jason Voorhees protective.
Welcome to the Into the Dark realm. Good Boy is consistent with the series’ usual quirky, current, yet darkly violent mood. It takes what could be an otherwise ridiculous scenario and makes it fun and overall enjoyable and most importantly entertaining.
As stated, Judy Greer is delightful as always, and she sells this zany story. It was great to see Steve Gutenberg as Maggie’s boss and Maria Conchita Alonso does a great job as Maggie’s annoying bitchy building manager. And, hat tips to the little Ruben’s performance as Ruben. 😊
Good Boy has a sufficient body count, especially for as Maggie states a 10-pound dog. As always, the episode left me with questions, but good questions this time. For instance, where can I get my little dog trained? I may or may not being kidding. The episode repeatedly stresses the idea that there are no bad dogs just bad owners. So, are we to believe that if Maggie were a little more chill, Reuben would not be auditioning to be the new Freddy Krueger? And, what’s Reuben’s backstory? Is he a serial killer?
Good Boy has earned its spot in my top three episodes of Into the Dark. It is the ultimate quirky, fun, ridiculous episode with the right mixture of blood we need right now! See Ruben does help anxiety.
