It’s day two of my Black History Month celebration, in which I am watching a Black horror film each day. Tonight, I will remain in the 90s, during my teen years with The People Under the Stairs. I loved this movie at the time, I think I probably had a crush on Brandon Adams, who plays Fool. He was Zeke in Moonwalker. Anyrant – also, I was fascinated about how this house looked normal from the outside, but inside there were all these hidden passages, dungeons, mazes and 50 zombie-looking kids. The film stars starring Brandon Adams, Everett McGill, Wendy Robie, and A. J. Langer.
Two adults and a juvenile break into a house occupied by a brother and sister and their stolen children. There, they must fight for their lives.
The People Under the Stairs makes the second Wes Craven directed and this time written film from my Black History Month watch list. Craven has stated that the film was partially inspired by a real-life news story from 1978. The case involved two African-American burglars who made a forced entry into a house in Los Angeles, California, which unintentionally led to the local law enforcement discovering a pair of children who had been locked away by their parents.
When I watched this film when I got a little older, I found it even more disturbing because I picked up on the fact the Robesons are into S&M and bondage noted by the “Father”‘s outfit. It’s not hard to conclude, there is sexual abuse happening to Alice. Since, I am even older now, I’m sure I will pick on some more disturbing things.
On October 30, 2020, Collider reported that Jordan Peele and Win Rosenfeld signed on to produce a remake under Monkeypaw Productions for Universal Pictures. I will continue to suggest Brandon Adams now play the part of Leroy, that is if he wants.
