Fresh off my trip to the 1970s, but not quite back from the recent past next up on my 28 days of black horror movies for tonight’s viewing, we have Def by Temptation.
An evil succubus is preying on libidinous black men in New York City, and all that stands in her way is a minister-in-training, an aspiring actor, and a cop who specializes in cases involving the supernatural.
I really like the trailer for this because the callbacks are real blast from the past. Melba Moore, Freddy Jackson, Ashford and Simpson on the soundtrack– I mean come on son. 😀 But the fact that the late Bill Nun, Kadeem Hardison and Do the Right Thing get shoutouts are serious Black pop culture moments. You also have to note the death in the title is stylized with the 1990s Black pop culture Def. We had so many Def tings then, Def Jam, Def Comedy Jams, so of course we had to have a vampire film in 1990 called Def by Temptation.
I have to admit at the time, I was not a fan of this film at all. Most likely because again I was a teenage girl and didn’t understand the nuance and underlying messages of the film. It will be interesting to see how it hits me now.
