Entering the weekend with one of my favorite subgenre’s – the horror comedy. Tonight’s film in my 28 days of black horror movies is Meet the Blacks.

As Carl Black gets the opportunity to move his family out of Chicago in hope of a better life, their arrival in Beverly Hills is timed with that city’s annual purge, where all crime is legal for twelve hours.

This clear unserious take on The Purge stars: Mike Epps, Gary Owen, Zulay Henao, Lil Duval, Bresha Webb, George Lopez and Mike Tyson. It is directed and written by Deon Taylor (Fatale).

I watched this a few years ago on DVD and it was not bad, it has some genuinely funny moments, and it satirizes some very classic horror tropes. Also, I think the cameos by Mike Tyson and the late Charlie Murphy are funny. Some of the jokes are cringey, but overall, it is kind of fun.
