‘Chain Reactions’, a Cinematic Deep Dive Into the Lasting Impact of ‘The Texas Chain Saw Massacre’

I think for the most part, The Texas Chain Saw Massacre is one of the first horror films most people see when they tap into the genre. Well, it’s been just over 50 years since Tobe Hooper’s magnum opus shocked the world and forever changed the face of global cinema and popular culture popular culture, Chain Reactions charts the film’s profound impact and lasting influence.

Patton Oswalt, Takashi Miike, Alexandra Heller- Nicholas, Stephen King, and Karyn Kusama discuss through early memories, sensory experiences, and childhood trauma. By crafting a dynamic dialogue between contemporary footage and never-before-seen outtakes and delving into personal impressions triggered by distinct audiovisual formats (16mm, 35mm, VHS, digital), Chain Reactions goes to the heart of how a scruffy, no-budget independent film wormed its way into our collective nightmares and permanently altered the zeitgeist.

The film was written and directed by Alexandre O. Philippe. The doc has been a festival darling for the last few months. Chain Reactions was a winner at Venice Classics Award for Best Documentary on Cinema  and the Official Selection at Telluride Film Festival, Sitges, BFI London Film Festival, San Francisco International Film Festival, Fantastic Fest, Beyondfest, Karlovy Vary Film Festival.

I really like horror documentaries so I’m pretty sure this one be no exception.

The film opens is in NY and LA September 19 at NYC: Regal Union Square and
LA: Laemmle NoHo. Chain Reactions expands Nationwide September 26th.
